Oh, how I long for the days when we used to walk for miles and miles in all kinds of weather... This looks nice, and takes in quite a few megalithic sites!

I know that feeling about walking!
Nice article, but he doesn't really mention the sites, just the route. What an opportunity missed. Maybe Mark, our resident Bodmin expert, could do a similar article, but concentrating on the good stuff???

For research purposes I have been collecting the Wiltshire and Dorset walks published in the press and magazines for over 25 years. As a rule they unsurprisingly repeat themselves and the information about sites over and over without seeking to update it, either by incorporating archaeological research or indeed checking that the Victorian vicar that first contributed some nugget of information had actually got their facts straight. They also tend to lack I feel the sheer joy of being in the landscape, that was saturated in the writings of Jefferies, Massingham, or even Betjeman.
Bob Trubshaw has just published a book of walks around Avebury BTW.

Mr Trubshaw's book is already listed in our booklist for Xmas - to appear on the journal in the next couple of weeks.

This used to be one of stamping grounds. A truly amazing multi-period archaeological landscape. Bodmin Moor is often overlooked and I really do not know why!

It's a lovely walk and a shame he doesn't mention more about what you can see...but then some people just go for the walk and totally ignore the history etc...Have you ever been out with the Ramblers? I have done my own version of this walk many times but not written it up. He does start off using part of my Copper Trail walk, free copies of which can be sourced by emailing your name and address to:
booksales@bestofbodminmoor.co.uk - an excellent introduction to this beautiful area! Just add that Heritage Action offer to your email please.
Churchtown that he starts from is actually part of St Breward village, why he doesn't mention St Breward, or the pub, I do not know. If I do the walk I actually start from Casehill, just south of Alex Tor. This makes the route a little shorter and means you can include Louden Hil with its logan stone and also take in Fernacre circle. Garrow Hill features so much archaeology it can be a walk on its own. Showery Tor and the slopes of Roughtor are covered in points of interest, not much to see on Brown Willy but always worth the climb.
Makes me want to get out walking..but this has diverted me from what I should be doing so I best sign of...enjoy your weekend.
Mark
